Qualitative research

    Qualitative research is somehow not given as much emphasis as quantitative type. The reality is qualitative research is unique and has its merits. Qualitative research by and large involves gathering data from several sources and analysing the data. The sources are from group of people, questionnaires, interview, audio or video recordings, data from social media and others. The most common source will be from interviews. There are several forms of interviews: structured, semi-structured and unstructured interviews.

a)Structured interview- there is a system in the conduct of the interview

b)Semi- structured interview- there is some system in the setting of the interview

c)Unstructured interview- the conduct of the interview is open, the researcher may change the trajectory of the question depending on the response of the participant.

     There are several theories in the qualitative research, namely grounded theory, phenomenology and ethnography.

Grounded theory means that the theory is buried in the data. The researcher need to analyse the data-rich content and come to the conclusion.

Phenomenology means studying the phenomenon that happens among certain group of people.

Ethnography means the study involves certain ethnic groups’ culture, practice or way of living.

       There are two distinct ways where the data are analysed:

Constant comparison analysis means the data is constantly compared with other people/group until any outcome is achieved.

Content analysis means the researcher will analyse the data and identify the key concepts in the data, which are defined as codes or themes.

      The data from the study, whether it is from audio, video or any interview can be downloaded and analysed using special software such as NVivo. If there are any quantitative data is derived from the analysis, the data can be uploaded into quantitative software for statistical test analysis.
